More accessible queer events: what to check in advance
Questions about step-free access, toilets, seating, assistance and sensory conditions.
Accessible is not a mood or a single wheelchair icon. People need specific information to decide whether an event is reachable, usable and safe. Germany's Federal Accessibility Centre recommends including arrival, premises, communication and support early in planning.
Arrival and entrance
- Is the route from transport or parking step- and threshold-free?
- Which entrance works and how wide are doors?
- Will the lift operate for the whole event?
- Is there a reachable contact if the route is blocked?
Rooms, toilets and seating
An accessible entrance is insufficient if the programme, bar, cloakroom or toilet requires stairs. Describe circulation space, seating and accessible toilets. Reserved spaces should provide a good view without separating people from their group.
Hearing, seeing and understanding
State whether sign-language interpretation, captions, hearing loops, subtitles, audio description or Easy Read exist. Good lighting, contrast, large signs and a clear schedule help many people. Publish deadlines when support requires registration.
Sensory conditions and non-visible disabilities
Volume, changing lights, haze, crowds and unexpected touch can prevent participation. Describe intense stimuli and provide a quieter area or re-entry when possible. Nobody should reveal a diagnosis to request seating, water or a break.
Assistance and companions
Clarify rules for assistants, assistance dogs and equipment. State whether companions need tickets and how to register. Security checks should handle equipment respectfully, which requires clear staff preparation.
Include queer safety
Accessibility and queer safety overlap. A usable gender-neutral toilet, respectful language, photography information and reachable awareness contact may be decisive. The reporting route itself must be accessible.
How to ask as a visitor
- State the information you need, not your medical history.
- Request measurements or route detail if a general yes is insufficient.
- Reconfirm time-sensitive support shortly before the event.
- Ask for a contact available on the day.
Publish useful information
Publish confirmed features and limits: step-free entrance but no wheelchair-accessible toilet is more useful than unsupported accessible. Add a check date and contact. Physical barriers may take time; unclear information can improve immediately.
